Set up a virtual key for your Tesla

Hi everyone! :wave:

If you own a Tesla, we wanted to remind you that we have made it easier for your EV to participate in equiwatt events and earn rewards.

However, to make this possible, we need your help setting up a virtual key for Smartcar.

This virtual key allows us to securely automate the pausing and resuming of your EV’s charging during events—making the process seamless and stress-free for you.

Why use Smartcar?

Smartcar is a trusted platform that helps users securely connect their vehicles to apps like equiwatt. Setting up the virtual key ensures a reliable connection between your Tesla and the equiwatt app.

How to Set Up Your Virtual Key:

  1. Set up a Third-Party Virtual Key for Smartcar by following the instructions in our FAQ article.
  2. Disconnect your Tesla from the equiwatt app.
  3. Reconnect your Tesla to the equiwatt app.

Please Note:

  • If you drive a Tesla Model 3, Y, or a 2021+ Model S or X, you’ll need to set up your Phone as a Key first before adding the virtual key.
