Electricity in short supply but no equivents?

Been a while since I’ve seen an equivent, but electricity has been in short supply for quite a while. Odd?

Hi @John_Thomas,

Thank you for your message. The most recent event we ran was yesterday 22 Jan. However, as you say there has been a shortage of electricity on the grid on several days, especially this month.

The main reason for a lack of events is that NESO has decided to either not run events or reject the majority (and even all) bids on multiple occasions for proposed DFS events in favour of paying gas power plants to meet the demand. You may have seen a recent example of this in the news - Two power station owners to get more than £12m for three hours of electricity | Energy industry | The Guardian

This is something that we are raising with NESO directly alongside other DFS providers as we are not taking advantage of the millions of homes across the country that have proven they can assist in such circumstances.

All the best,

Mark - Team equiwatt

Yes, had seen the article. Weird huh?

However, the last event I have in my app was 19th December…

I want some assurance that the target here is to save energy in times of stress/strain on the network and not just for those that are financially able, to take part in a game, that coincidentally earns them a bob-or-two.

Good question.

A pal of mine questions whether installing large numbers of smart switches - albeit with very low (0.4W?) consumption - to run all the time has an impact that is emissions reducing as a whole.

(If we have to burn gas to keep the smart switches running during non-equivent periods, the impact of the scheme as a whole is carbon positive.)

I assume it is, but I’d like to see the working of the arithmetic.

I haven’t been notified of a power down event since December. There’ve been lots of power shortages since.

Have now tried logging the app out.
